Honours Degree in Technology Management Program

The graduate program Technology Management prepares highly talented students for future leadership positions in society and industry in the field of high-technology management. Theoretical and methodological knowledge, soft skills, hands-on experience in trend research, product development, marketing, and entrepreneurship are imparted in English language.

Each semester up to 20 students, mainly of Business Administration, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, get enrolled. During the program students are involved in project- and team-based lectures, seminars, and workshops which reflect the latest business and technology topics of practical relevancy.

Courses are supported by renowned business partners of high-technology and consulting sectors. Excellent education is achieved by the integration of relevant external academic and professional guest lecturers, intense coaching, strong networking, lived interdisciplinarity and highly innovative course formats.

Studies abroad at prestigious partner universities in Asia, Europe, and North America, or an internship abroad is an integral part of the curriculum and emphasizes the high degree of the program’s internationality.

During the course of studies, students learn to act at the interface between high-technology and business. They learn to take the role as effective managers in a dynamic and cross-functional environment, in which technology and business-related questions overlap. On top of all this, students gain access to an active network of academics, professionals, and other highly motivated students.

Technology Management Curriculum

The study program Technology Management (HDiTM) at CDTM is usually completed in two to four terms according to the student's study situation. During this time of studying at CDTM students earn 45 ECTS credits and are awarded an Honours Degree in Technology Management afterwards. The study program includes one term abroad.

The study program consists of core courses as well as electives. All courses can be chosen flexibly and according to each student's personal situation and needs. The whole curriculum is based on five different interdisciplinary areas:

  • technologies, product development and engineering
  • information systems management
  • economics, management and entrepreneurship
  • soft skills
  • ethics and humanities

Course formats are innovative: Classes are small and interactive and aim at combining theory and practice.

Lecturers come from universities in- and outside Germany as well as from partner companies. Students, professors and industry executives benefit from the interactivity fostered in courses like Trend Seminar, Managing Product Development and Entrepreneurship Laboratory.

The commitment of students, lecturers and industry partners make CDTM classes a challenging and inspiring experience.

The program is meant to be completed during the regular studies. Please note, that CDTM does not offer a stand-alone master program. Rather you will get enrolled in an Honours Degree in Technology Management program, that you do in parallel to your main studies.

Elective Courses

Advanced Topics in Information Systems

The Advanced Topics in Information Seminar targets specific questions within the field of Information Economics. Renowned researchers from foreign academic institutions are invited to introduce students into their fields of research. Students approach the research topic by attending specially designed lectures and by working on and preparing related case studies. The current research topic in Summer Term 2008 will be “the Business of Software”, presented by Prof. Michael A. Cusumano from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Business Modeling with Excel

In organizations, from self-employed sole traders through to major multinational companies, nearly all new ideas or initiatives require a financial or commercial evaluation, typically included within a business plan. The analysis is often performed through the creation of a business model in a spreadsheet package. Unfortunately, great business ideas do not always receive the support they deserve. The business models that provide the commercial justification for the idea are often poorly structured and, in some cases, simply inaccurate. The result is a misleading view of the financial strength of the idea. This course guides you through the development of business models that is relevant to all sizes of organizations and business modelling situations. It examines all the common aspects of a business model, such as forecasting the size of a market and managing stock and working capital through to developing a profit and loss account and a balance sheet and even valuing a company.

Business Planning

The elective introduces students to the production of a successful business plan as communication tool between entrepreneurs and investors. Objectives, contents and practices of a business plan are covered as well as organization, creation and presentation of contents. On the basis of case examples, avoidable typical weaknesses are discussed. The participants learn to assess a market with limited resources and to perform a first evaluation of market potentials, which serves as basis for the business model and for judging a business idea. On the basis of a case study, student teams generate own business plans and present them to a professional expert panel.

Career Planning Seminar

An important part of the curriculum is the Career Planning Seminar, offering ideas and best practice examples on how to apply for any specific job in your career as well as decision support about what job to look for in the first place. The workshop covers: developing and writing resumes and cover letters; useful tips for the recruiting process; interview preparation; market research, assessment of own abilities, interests, values and goals.

Emotional Leadership and Social Dynamics

Believe it or not - Emotions are at the heart of all our interactions, personal and business alike. As a consequence, all convincing communication requires emotions. You need to be fully aware of your emotions and sense the other person’s needs in order to emotionally convince another person.

The skills you need to emotionally lead people can be learned. This course takes a hands-on approach to help you build the skills necessary for being an emotional leader. In class and in the street you will learn what it takes. In order to achieve the goal of becoming an emotional leader, Niels Bohrmann therefore has developed a special training for CDTM students. In order to so, he combined techniques from the Flirtkurse program he teaches throughout Germany, as well as strategies from his experiences as the owner and head coach of Munich MMA

Entrepreneurial Negotiations

This course deals with theory and practice of entrepreneurial negotiation. It includes a theory part about interdisciplinary negotiation research, prescriptive theory and practical tools. The practice part of the course will deal with negotiation training through simulations, experimenting and Feedback discussions.

The course offers a compact and hands-on introduction into entrepreneurial negotiation and is very valuable for everyone interested in not only improving his soft-skills but also in learning to deal with real-life negotiation situations.

Media Economics

The study of Media Economics analyses the economic activities of producers and consumers in the media market. The media market covers the traditional mass media print and broadcasting (newspapers, books, radio, TV) as well as the new field of online media. The focus of this course will be set on general issues of traditional media as well as particular issues in the online-sector. These involve the allocation of scarce resources to the production and consumption of media goods as well as the setting of prices or the implementation of standards.

The subject is divided into three areas of interest - supply side, demand side and market side of the media sector - giving a rough framework for individual lectures of the course.

The course is intended to develop an understanding of selected issues in Media Economics. Particular issues will be analysed using formal mathematical spreadsheet models.

Mobile Research & Development

In an ubiquitous computing environment, the user is surrounded by a wealth of computing devices and networks. These devices and networks are, in effect, invisible to the user. Sensor networks notice our presence by face recognition; walls have embedded displays; we carry communication devices, or we have sensors in our clothes that monitor our mood. Computing devices are always there and the user can always rely on these resources. This scenario of "pervasive communication" will be the next (re-)evolution in the telecommunications industry and it will have social as well as technological impact on our society.

Furthermore, machine-to-machine communications is predicted to overtake human voice and data traffic in the near future. However, the technological base as well as the market is still in a preliminary stage of development.

Multimodal Human Computer Interaction

Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) is the study of interaction between human users and computers. Multimodal HCI offers the users different modalities of exchanging input/output with the computer. This course will focus on the combination of visual interfaces with speech-based interfaces – both on a technical as well as a usability level. Finally, students will have the opportunity to prototype their own multimodal HCI interfaces as a practical exercise.

Science & Technology in Society

In cooperation with the Institute for History of Technology (Zentralinstitut für Geschichte der Technik) of the Technische Universität München, CDTM offers a series of lectures about the cultural dimension of technology with Prof. Dr. phil Ulrich Wengenroth. Taskforces

The idea of taskforces

Strong student involvement is one of the core pillars of CDTM's philosophy and education. Therefore, students play a decisive role for the organization of the CDTM and autonomously contribute to its success: As members of several taskforces, they learn to assume full responsibility in crucial areas.

Student teams work autonomously on different tasks in the CDTM and form an essential part of the CDTM organizational model. They work result-oriented towards their goals and have full responsibility for the tasks taken over. They support the CDTM at cooperative tasks and contribute a lot to the success of CDTM.

Different taskforces are contributing to the management of CDTM:

  • Alumni Taskforce
(alumni management, fireside chats, and startup recruiting events)
  • Marketing / Corporation and Communication Taskforce
(development of marketing strategies, design of CDTM posters, flyers, and press articles)
  • IT and Web Taskforce
(programming, launching, and updating of the CDTM IT infrastructure and web resources)
  • Kick-off Taskforce
    (organization of the facilitation weekend)
  • Recruiting Taskforce
(lecture visits, screening of potential candidates, recruiting events)
  • Social Events Taskforce
(planning parties, trips, and other social events)

We strive to support an active student life. Therefore, students’ ideas and visions are always welcome!

CDTM provides a home for your ideas!
