Andreas Butz is a professor of Computer Science at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) Munich, teaching and conducting research in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). He received his PhD from Saarland University in 1997, worked as a PostDoc at Columbia University, New York, founded a company in 2000 and headed it as the CEO for 2 years. While the company is still doing well, Andreas Butz returned to academia with an Emmy Noether grant from DFG and was appointed as an assistant professor at LMU in 2004. In 2007, he recieved the Alcatel Lucent research award on technical communication, and in 2010, after several external offers, was appointed as a full professor at LMU.

In research, Andreas Butz and his group are investigating interaction with computers in a variety of form factors. This includes novel forms of interaction with mobile and embedded devices, but also interactive surfaces, furniture and rooms. In teaching, he covers the whole range of HCI education at LMU and has set up interdisciplinary study programs, involving arts, design and psychology. Andreas Butz is an elected member of the governing board of the German Computer Science Association (GI), a member of Muenchner Kreis, and of the DBLP advisory board. He is a coeditor of several scientific journals, and a regular reviewer for DFG and the major conferences of his field.
