The buildings and construction sector is responsible for about 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions, making it one of the largest emitters worldwide. In comparison, the whole aviation sector is responsible for only about 2.5% of global GHG. With the European Union´s goal to reduce emissions by 55% by 2030 and to net-zero by 2050, the buildings sector is under high pressure to decarbonize.

To be precise, regulators are currently discussing to only allow zero emission construction by 2028 for the public sector and by 2030 for all. The talk about “stranded assets” is becoming louder – buildings that nobody wants to buy or rent because they are so energy intensive in operation that without renovation they cannot meet climate requirements.

But with big problems also come big opportunities. Startups started to serve this hard to decarbonize sector and we are lucky to have some of them in the Munich ecosystem. They will each give a short impulse talk on how they are tackling the decarbonization of the sector and then go into smaller discussion rounds with participants.
